I grew up thinking Virginia City was in Virginia, which was confusing bc I couldn’t understand what the Ponderosa and Ben Cartwright and his manly boys—it was all so western— were doing on the east coast. There was no Google then, and my World Book Encyclopedia was useless (how do you look up “Where is Virginia City?” or “Is Virginia City in Virginia?” in an index?). But now, not only do I understand, but I got to walk the streets Ben and Adam and Hoss and Little Joe might have walked when they went into town to get hay, or whatever they went into town to get.
